You may not recognize their names, but you probably remember this image. In celebration of the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, we honor John Carlos and Tommie Smith, two African American medalists who raised their fists in black power salute during the Star-Spangled Banner. During the Jim Crow era, life for all black men and women was tough. But through all the hardships, these men triumphed. To them, this was a symbol of resistance and defiance. The sight of two black athletes in open rebellion on the international stage sent a message to both America and the world. We hope this image does not fade. We hope people find inspiration in this portrait.
