The Facts Behind AF1

The Air Force 1 came on the scene in 1982 as the first basketball shoe to house Nike Air. It revolutionized the game while rapidly gaining traction around the world as a status symbol, impacting people and communities all-over. From that moment on, the Air Force 1 has served multiple purposes. One, as a basketball performance shoe. And two, adopting outside the lines to becoming one of the most versatile sneakers ever.

Bruce Kilgore’s forward-thinking design led the Nike Basketball footwear to set the tone on the court and off. It became the very first basketball shoe with Nike Air. And as it started progressing, sneaker retailers in the Baltimore, Philly and New York areas copped this precious gem very rapidly. It then gravitated from on-the-court to in the streets.

Court and cultural beginnings took form of the silhouette, so every single detail of the design was crafted with excellence. This sudden rise to fame led to lengthening the original White/Neutral grey colorway to an extended color collection. The 90s and early 2000s were a major force for this change as it gained the support of multiple NBA legends and found its legacy in the hip-hop communities. The AF1 phenomenon propelled the shoe to new heights, starring in music videos, movies and all around the streets.

The Air Force 1, today, is an icon in sneaker and pop culture. With its groundbreaking introduction to new Nike Air technology and unforgettable Swoosh logo, the AF 1 is truly a FORCE to be reckoned with.
