Nike, Inc. is an American based multinational corporation that focuses on design, development, manufacturing, and worldwide marketing and selling of footwear, apparel, equipment, accessories and services. The company is based out of Beaverton, Oregon. Since Nike’s founding in 1964, the company has propelled itself to be the most popular shoe and athletic wear brand. Nike has evolved into one of the world’s largest suppliers of shoes and athletic apparel with annual revenues reaching $24.1 billion (2012). The brand alone is valued at $10.7 billion, thus making it the most valuable sports businesses.
Nike was founded January 25, 1964, originally named Blue Ribbon Sports, by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. The company originally started by distributing Japanese shoe maker Onitsuka Tiger (now known as Asics). By 1971, BRS had cut ties with Onitsuka Tiger and starting making their own sports shoe. The company name stems from the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike.
Today, Nike markets its products under its own brand, as well as countless other sport specific brands (i.e. Jordan, Nike Golf, Nike SB). In addition to their multiple brands, Nike operates countless stores worldwide. Nike also sponsors many high-profile athletes and sports teams around the world.
